Yen and Langari aim to introduce soft computing to upper-level undergraduate and beginning graduate students, as well as to practicing engineers, with a well-balanced presentation of theory and applications. The book consists of 17 chapters, organized in four parts. 'Fuzzy Logic' introduces all the core concepts and techniques necessary for a thorough understanding of the material to follow. Especially enlightening is the clear distinction between two types of fuzzy rules: fuzzy mapping rules and fuzzy implication rules. Part 2, 'Fuzzy Logic Control,' is devoted to the most important and successful application area of fuzzy set theory. In addition to the basic material, the relevant analytical issues are discussed. Part 3, 'Fuzzy Logic in Intelligent Information Systems,' touches on the impact of fuzzy logic in the areas of artificial intelligence, database and information systems, and pattern recognition. The fourth part, on 'Fuzzy Model Identification and Soft Computing,' focuses on techniques for automated design of fuzzy rule-based systems and contains chapters on neurofuzzy systems and genetic algorithms. Almost all chapters close with a summary, bibliographical and historical notes, and exercises. Well-chosen examples give a true feeling for what is possible by applying the methods and techniques presented in the book. The book also surveys recent results that have been scattered over various journals, and relates them to each other. The book ends with a 41-page bibliography, containing 721 references, and a 6-page index. From a formal point of view, two things surprised me. First, there are many (mostly minor) typos, some of which could have easily been avoided by using a spelling checker. However, the authors list errata on the Web http://www. cs.tamu.edu/faculty/yen/FLtext/errata/index.html. Second, some references to journal papers lack the volume or page numbers. These two small points are the only obstacles preventing this superb volume from being called perfect. Therefore, I recommend it to anyone interested in its topic. I t is one of the outstanding monographs on fuzzy logic and soft computing.
